The Ingredients of Good Haiku

It has been a long time that I've not been posting regularly, putting up new acrostics on this blog. I haven't stopped writing poetry, though, of course. In fact, it's probably because I've been taking my writing so much more seriously that I don't spend much time posting here.

One of my recent projects, about which I posted here earlier, included using 30 of my haiku on a series of designer lamps. It was a fun project, and the lamps turned out great. Reviews of Christian Fiction

I have started to build a new website with Christian fiction book reviews. The site has reviews of all sorts of titles, whether they be books marketed specifically as Christian fiction, or books that seem like things Christian readers might be interested in. I want to eventually have all kinds of books, old or new, and really aim to feature a breadth of titles, authors, and genres.

I have been posting reviews that I have written, and will continue to do so for as long as the site is up. At the same time, I want other readers to send reviews for inclusion on the website too. It doesn't matter whether the reviewer is a Christian or not. I am open to reviews from anyone, as long as the review keeps in mind that most the people reading at the site will be Christians, and so are written with that readership in mind.

There are a number of books that are already displayed on the site, and if you want to help, you can send a review of one of those, because I do want reviews of the same book from different readers. If you prefer, on the other hand, to send a review of a book not yet listed there, that's great too, as I also want to increase the number of titles I've got displayed on the site.

In My Garage

There are so many uses for garages that it is really unbelievable. You can convert it into a (hopefully soundproof) place for the kids to practice with their new band. Or you can use it as a work space for whatever hobby you have. Or perhaps you like the traditional keep-the-car-safe option.

For my family, the garage serves a few purposes. It is the laundry room. It is where we keep the huge deep freeze (in which two or three of us could easily fit), so that any excess of food can be kept for the next generation to see what food we eat these days. We keep both cars there, and it is a general storage area for all manner of very valuable junk.

But, primarily, it is our entrance to the house. We seldom use the front door, and almost everyone walks in through the garage and into the back door. Yes.... that means they weave their way through the very valuable junk, between two cars, past our laundry (clean or dirty), past the hulking deep freeze, and into to the door. It is, I suppose, what makes our guests feel like family.

Migration

I am migrating my travel blog to a site called Peregrine Online. I know, ironic, huh? Well, it seemed like the thing to do, putting it on its own domain.

I will be writing about the same sorts of things I always have, travel around Singapore, China, and other parts of Asia, as well as other spots I've been around the globe.

I'm adding in another section to the blog, which is more on life in Singapore and Shanghai, especially with tips for foreigners staying in one place or the other (I split my time between the two, though I was brought up in the US).

Bagwell's Number Retired

Jeff Bagwell remains one of my favorite baseball players of all time. It was really great to read about the celebration in Houston earlier this week to retire his number.

It is sad that the fans were so classless as to boo Purpura and Garner at the ceremony. Apparently, that resulted in both being fired the next day. It seems that Bagwell deserved more respect than to have this sort of thing happen during his day in the sun. But then, he's never really liked the spotlight, so I suppose it is fitting. Just a shame it had to be overshadowed by the negatives, but then, so goes 2007 for the Houston Astros.

Spotlight on Silken: Genesis

I've been talking a lot about my blogging pal, silken. But let me take you back to where it all began... sort of.

Silken used to blog with me under another name, skouba, at a site called Writing Up. She learned the ins and outs of blogging there, like I did. And she really maintained a fantastic blog there.

Sadly, the site is more or less defunct now (though you can find it popping up every now and then). I miss the place there and the fun conversations we used to have. I am glad, though, skouba/silken is now blogging elsewhere. It would be sad to lose her insights in an online setting. Interacting with her at the site is what I most miss about losing it.

I am, though, one of the lucky ones. I know skouba/silken in real life, and have known her all my life. So, for me, at least I won't lose touch with her, even if the whole internet falls apart!

Florida Hotels

I mentioned in an earlier blog how much fun it is to travel to Florida to enjoy all the great attractions there. Places like Disney World, Sea World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, and all of the rest of the fun places there will always attract guests. I highly recommend a trip to the area, especially for anyone who's never been.

Spotlight on Silken at Communati

I am continuing on my quest to write a short entry introducing each of the blogs of one of my blogging friends, silken. Her newest one (to my knowledge) is at a new site called communati, which is a community-style blogging site. I like how silken's personality really comes out in this casual setting, where commenting is as important as posting. I haven't gotten into that site yet as much as I would like, due to a busy schedule since the site opened. That means I haven't gotten to read all of silken's entriesat the new site -- not yet -- but I have enjoyed the ones I've read.

Take a look at this post on reading keys, where she shares some ideas about a tool she plans to use as she starts homeschooling her 2 young nephews. I like how she shares there about her own philosophy of focusing on phonics rather than sight words. It's the sort of discussion she often posts there, and is great for anyone who teaches kids (whether parents or teachers).

Spotlight on Silken: Each New Day

Silken, the blogger I am presently highlighting here, keeps another very high quality blog at blog.com. She calls this one Each New Day. I love the optimism and sense of hope reflected in that title. It likewise shows up throughout the blog's entries.

Like her other blogs, silken here shares little tidbits of things she finds here and there. I like her post on the Schlitterbahn in Galveston. Her enthusiasm for the fun one can find in life is shown up in this post. She's not going to be scared off by long lines at a summer outing. Instead, she focuses on the fun her family has when they all go out together.

The whole site is pretty much like that, and it makes for a really pleasant read. And, on top of that, you'll probably find out about a lot of things you never heard of before. That's one of the best parts about all of silken's blogs. She has a curious mind, and a willingness to share the things she's picked up here and there. That makes for very fun reading.

I get credit cards in the mail all the time. When I start reading through all of the fine print, I get a little bit of a headache. I just don't know which one best suits my needs. Spotlight on Silken: Sowing Seeds

I am continuing to highlight my blogging friend, silken, and I have reached one of my favorites of her blogs. It's not at blogspot, but at a different blog site (blog.com), and I like how she's kept this one very thematic. She calls this blog Sowing Seeds, and she focuses on raising kids, using the growth of a plant or seed as the metaphor that shapes the paradigm she is focusing.

One of her recent entries, Mutation is a great example of what I like about this blog. Look at the insights she draws from the simple definition offered when she applies it to teenage kids. It's simple, and that's where the beauty of this blog lies.

A lot of times at this blog I will learn of phrases I hadn't heard of before, not being much of a gardener myself, like dethatching. It's great how silken is able to define terms like this and make them understandable, and then apply them to her role as a parent.

I really love the approach she has taken here. This is, in my estimation, a top-notch blog.

Spotlight on Silken: Rhyme Time

I am continuing to highlight my blogging buddy, silken, and the great work she does in keeping up her little blogging kingdom that she has built up. I've reached one of her spaces where she seems to just be having a good time. At her Rhyme Time, she enters cute rhymes, and they are often very entertaining. I find myself getting a little laugh out of them all the time.

I keep 3 different blogs filled with rhymed poetry myself, as well as this one with acrostics, so I know that maintaining a fun, lighthearted poetry blog is not as easy as it sounds. But silken does it very well. Whether writing about Fish Camp or about rainy days, you can see that silken is having a good time doing it.

Spotlight on Silken: Kidbits

As I continue highlighting the work of one of my favorite bloggers, silken, I've come to one of the most fun blogs you'll find. Silken's daughter keeps this one, and it is called kidbits. If you've read the mother's blogs, I think you will see lots of the mother in the daughter's work too.

A lot (but not all) of the entries are in 10-point format (like one of her mom's blogs), and all have interesting ideas and info (again, like at mom's blogs). I enjoyed reading what the girl had learned about 9/11 and the World Trade Center, and equally enjoyed her list of ideas for Mother's Day.

This blog, like her big brother's, is apparently on holiday at the moment. With the school year picking up and the kids being back to work (does that mean they remember how to read and write again???), I suspect it will pick up. Stop by to visit, and tell her I sent you!

Spotlight on Silken: Family Night

I am still highlighting one of my favorite bloggers, silken. She keeps lots of useful and interesting blogs. One of the really nice resources she has is Family Night, where she shares lots of great ideas for things that the whole family can do together.

Just look at this entry on treasure hunts. She includes some great photos there, and gives a good explanation of the activity she writes about. This is not something just thrown together. Rather, you can tell it comes from a parent who has lots of ideas and is eager to share them. Her quality of writing is of the highest, and I think you will enjoy the activities you see listed there.

The family fun runs sound like lots of fun to me. And take a look at what she says about letterboxing. Doesn't that sound like a ball?

Spotlight on Silken: Places to Go

Continuing the spotlight on my blogging friend, silken, I'd like to turn to her blog called Places to Go. This is a unique sort of travel blog because silken doesn't just talk about places she's been, but also about places she hasn't been, but would like to go. I think that's pretty clever, really!

Just look here what she says about Vienna, or here about Avebury. You'll find out about all sorts of places when you read through this blog. I mean, I never even heard of the Museum of Hoaxes till I read about it on her blog.

Here, you can also find out about movies that talk about specific places, like what you see in her entry on an arctic tale.

Spotlight on Silken: Random Activities

I'm continuing the process of turning the spotlight on my blogging friend, silken. She keeps a number of blogs, and I thought it would be fun to point you to them all.

The blog at her spot called random activities is especially fun because it is kept not just by her, but by her son. He posts some of his school assignments there.

Disney theme parks are great fun. One of my favorite holiday memories is still a trip we took to Disney World when my nephew was little. My niece was still a baby, but we did drag her all around the park, and even as a baby of just a few months old, she had a great time. We all really did love being there as a family. That is really the way to see Disney World.

The only drawback that many find to the see-Disney-World-as-a-family plan is that it can mean a lot of expense. That's why these Cheap Disney World Vacation Packages are such a great find. Spotlight on Silken: Did You Know?

One of the fun ones she keeps is called Did You Know? In this blog, you can find all sorts of little tidbits of information. She comes up with all sorts of clever little things.

Take this one: Did You Know What it Takes to be a Perfumer? That might not be something I would've ever asked, nor particularly wondered about. But when she raised it, I did find it interesting, and it got my curiosity going.

Appraisal360

Sometimes we find ourselves trapped in a single way of thinking, and forget to try to see things from other perspectives. This is, in my mind, never a good thing. It limits what one can do. I find it especially troubling in any endeavor toward effective communication between people. It can be very harmful in homes, schools, or work places. Really, it can be harmful in any relationship between two people.

That's what impresses me about 360 degree feedback. It is a management tool that allows employers to move away from tunnel vision when evaluating their employees. The Appraisal360 system has the evaluator gather information not just from the one being evaluated, but from 5 others who work closely with him or her. This means that the feeback, when put together, comes not just from one perspective, but from a more well-rounded view.

This is a very valuable resource for HR departments, managers, supervisors... anyone who needs to evaluate other workers. Many personal coaches are also finding it a particularly useful tool.

I know what you are thinking, upon reading the title of this blog. "Fitness dating??? What is that?"

Fitnessdates.com is a listing of fitness personals. The blurb on the site reads says that you can "search through thousands of fit singles looking for someone like you."

When you browse the photos there, that seems to be quite an accurate description. Most of the faces and bodies there are for the good-looking. So, if you are on the lookout for someone who is fit, and into fitness in general, this is a good website to go and have a look.

You can join for free, and then you can browse by photos, by location, or by a search based on criteria specified by you.

There are a lot of dating sites out there. For many, there is a lot of fear in this sort of "blind dating" that you'll end up with someone very mismatched to your fitness level, particularly for those who are very much into staying in shape. This site is targeted at people with precisely this interest. So, if that describes you, it's a good place to stop and have a look.

The Building Blocks of Our Language

In my last post about Psalms 119, I mentioned something about how easy it is to get distracted by the attention to letters when writing an acrostic and take your eye off the theme. It only struck me when I said that that there really is a clear difference between acrostics and other types of poetry. English poetry, generally, treats words as the building blocks of our language. Only acrostics view letters as such.

Psalms 119

Psalms 119, as I mentioned in my last post, is a beautifully constructed acrostic poem in Hebrew. But it is not only the structure that is beautiful in the poem, but the continually reference back to a single theme: obedience to God's written law.

Having written a large number of acrostics, I appreciate this point about Psalms 119. It is easy to let the structure of the letters carry you off topic. To have sustained a meditation on a single theme, and yet constructed such a beautifully structured acrostic, is really a magnificent feat.

Now That's an Acrostic

One of the greatest acrostics ever written has to be Psalms 119, which I just finished reading with my nephews. It is a lengthy read. That is because of the structure of the poem. It is an acrostic built on the Hebrew alphabet, alloting 8 verses to each letter of the alphabet. Imagine coming up with 8 lines over and over for each letter till you make your way through the whole alphabet.

Beautiful.

PC, continued

I am reprinting this from my my old blog. That site appears to be on its last legs, and I don't want to lose some of the posts there.

At the old site, I seldom posted paid entries (unlike here). That is part of why I started this and other blogs. This entry explained my thoughts on the issue, as it was somewhat contentious at that site.

One thing I have learned, too, is that these ads are probably most appropriate for those blogs which are not too demanding on your time, emotional engergy, or whatever. As an active member of the community life here, I've felt it wouldn't work out very well at this spot here (at believin's place), and so have pretty much avoided them here.

The other thing I've figured out is that the secret to generating a successful income stream with these blog ad companies is to maintain multiple blogs. I have several going now, and am aiming to average at least $10 per blog per week. I think that is a very easy goal to reach and maintain -- I am doing better than that each week so far, but I think $10 per week per blog is a more realistic sustainable goal.

That's not a lot of money per blog. This, for me, makes it imperative that these blogs don't demand too much of my time. I am not spending more than 1 hour per week on those other blogs combined at present. I am considering dedicating 5 hours per week to building it up, which would end up generating a rather nice small-but-steady trickle of funds coming in (approximately $800-1000 per month, if the present numbers hold). I am monitoring this small start I've made over the next 6 months to see how it does before I decide to branch out too much. But if spending 5 hours a week were to generate $800-1000 monthly over a sustained period of time, that would be a nice reward for something I enjoy doing anyway.

At any rate, I know this might not be the thing for everyone. But if you think you might have some way to apply this sort of method of blogging to generate some income, I thought I'd share my bit of experience and offer it as help to anyone who might like to look into it.

The ad companies I am currently using include blogitive and blogsvertise, both of which I have liked, but neither of which is perfect. I have just signed up under blogtoprofit too. I am not sure how it will work, but am going to give it a shot. I am also registered at buzzbyblog, which serves more niche advertisers at this moment. I haven't had any offers there yet, but the admin staff there just sent me an email saying they are working to expand their pool of advertisers who are looking for more general sites to advertise at, and will be in touch with offers before long (they hope). ReviewMe is a similar site that should be up before long. I've also checked out inblogads, but again no offers. I am waiting to develop my new blogs further before applying for PayPerPost (the company about which I have heard the most positive feedback) and bloggingads.

It can mean different things in different contexts.

"Use a PC? What? Why? Are there no Macs left on earth?"

"No, I don't think it is very PC for you to make insulting jokes about women. Typical male, to not know that."

See... things like that.

But for me, PC has just taken on a new meaning. Let me delay no further. I'd like to introduce you to my newest alter ego, Poetically Challenged.

As I explained in my previous blog, I'm using this new blog I've started as a place to do two things: do warm up exercises before I begin really working on my "real" poetry writing each day, and to make a little extra cash from blogging.

I've been trying out a few blogs at other sites to see how these short verses work in conjunction with blog ad sites, and I've found them to be quite compatible. The purpose of the short verses I write as a sort of "warm up exercise" each day is to not overthink content, but to write quickly to a specific form. The ads are perfect for this because the content is there, ready made, allowing me to concentrate freely on form. At other sites, I have a blog dedicated to acrostics, and 2 different blogs dedicated to rhyme. I might consider starting other blogs later to work on other forms, but for now those are enough.

If you are interested in making a little extra cash from blogging, I have found this to be quite useful and effective. If you have some sort of similar writing exercises that you work on, the blogging ads provide topics that don't require the writer to overthink content. It gives the writer a lot of freedom to work on form, and to make a small trickle of income in doing so.

I've made a few extra bucks over the past 6 weeks. I suspect such a method of blogging would work without having to rely on rhymes or whatever. If you are a poet, or a wannabe like me, this works nicely. If you are a fiction writer, perhaps this would work in writing fiction too. I am sure there are many other applications for various forms of writing.

Paid to Blog

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you might be surprised to see a post about the use of a blog to make money. Blogitive ads were starting to show up all over the place at this site before I even knew what Blogitive was, so I am not exactly the blogger most look to for advice on how to cash in on a blog. But, eventually even I started hearing some bloggers talk about how they were enjoying a measure of success with Blogitive, and seeing a trickle of income, all growing out of very small amounts of work.

At the same time, I began seeing other bloggers object to these sorts of income-generating posts. I could see the points of objection, particularly because in a community-oriented site like this such posts seemed to leave some feeling like a friend had just tried to sell them Amway at a church picnic. I can sympathize with that feeling, on the one hand, and yet can see the other side too -- most of us signed up here with the expectation of a little bit of income coming from it, didn't we?

Hm. I wasn't sure what I felt about it, but I decided not to use this blog as a site for advertising. With the sorts of topics I've been posting on, I felt the ads might be out of place. I have, though, experimented with Blogitive at other sites. At Wordpress, I made a fair amount of money in a very short time. And my account there was promptly cancelled. It appears Wordpress doesn't appreciate such posts.

Other sites, though, have turned out to be more suitable for Blogitive ads. I've opened up blogs at Live Journal, Blogger (recommended by Blogitive), and Xanga (the one I like best). All of those seem to be working out nicely with Blogitive.

For me, I've stuck with doing posts at those sites that are still in line with things I can enjoy. I use them for doing "warm up" writing before I really get to work each day. I write short, playful rhymes, or acrostics, or such things as that. I have, at each blog, a set form on which I am concentrating. I also have a time limit for how long I will spend on each post (about 2 minutes max). Each Blogitive ad fits in with the form, and gives me a topic for my warm up exercises. I don't do a lot of commenting at those sites, but I have done the work of getting the blogs registered with Feedburner, and generally trying to do a proper job of setting them up. Once the set-up is over with, I've found maintaining them pretty easy, and even helpful in getting the creative juices going before getting down to the real work on the writing I take more seriously.

A benefit of keeping multiple blogs is that the offers for ads are also multiplied. As long as each post is original, it is acceptable to write more than once for the same company. In this way, I've established a fair trickle of funds coming my way from Blogitive. It isn't like I'm rolling in the dough or anything, but it is working out nicely.

I have, however, decided to keep with the general policy of keeping this particular blog mostly ad-free. If I find an ad offer from Blogitive, like this one, that makes me I feel I have something to say, I will accept it. Otherwise, I will reject it. I have rejected well over $100's worth (probably more like $200) of offers for this blog since I signed up over there (about 6 weeks ago). It doesn't mean that I don't like to see the ads on others' blogs, but that I feel it doesn't quite suit the tone of this particular spot.

I think Inklings has come up with a nice option for how she's managing the ads at her blogs. I've heard other bloggers mention other plans. One that I plan to implement soon is to start a second blog at WU which is more suitable for ads to appear in. If I do start that, like I intend to, I will put another post here pointing to it, if anyone is interested.

Anyway, these are thoughts I've been planning to post anyway. The offer from Blogitive happens to have come at a time that it has prompted me to post it now.

The best news I see over there, by the way, is that a new service will soon be offered. Blogitive will be seeking ghost writers to submit posts at their site to offer to clients. These won't appear at the writer's own site, but at the clients. For those who are willing to write copy, but less inclined to host it on your own site, this might prove a very useful way to get in on some moderate income for work that is not very demanding.

Training at the Pentagon

The focus of the recent podcast at Inside Online Education is Capella University, specifically talking about how the institution is managing the training programs at the Pentagon. Now, that is pretty cool.

Capella University was founded in 1993, and has since that time been offering quality online degrees to students from all over the world. I don't know why it surprised me to hear about these training programs at the Pentagon that Capella is managing, considering their excellent track record and all that. Well-rounded

Everyone likes to be well-rounded. Well, except for maybe around the waist, but that's a different story, isn't it?

I'm talking about being well-rounded in a good sense, meaning that one has a breadth of perspective in all one does. As a manager, 360 degree feedback is designed to help you be well-rounded in how you evaluate your staff. What happens in 360 degree feedback is that an employee does a self-evaluation, and 6 others answer the same question s/he answers, but from their own perspectives. A Favorite Police Song

There's a great new Police CD coming out, and I am excited! The Police have been one of my favorite all-time bands for a very, very long time.

I am trying to decide, for the sake of this post, what is my favorite song by The Police. I have many a Police CD in my collection (and will have another 2-disc set soon), so it is really, really hard to choose which is my favorite song.

Which is funny. Because I have always said that "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is my favorite song by The Police, with the "disclaimer" that it is hard to ignore "Roxanne" as a close competitor. But, really, there are lots and lots of Police songs that are in close running too. "Invisible Sun" is another that is high on the list, as is anything on the whole Synchronicity album. "Don't Stand So Close to Me" is also way up there.

I have to attribute my love of The Police to two things. First, they had a really cutting edge sound that blended a lot of jazz in with a very rock base. I love that, as I have always been a big jazz fan. But the other thing I always loved about The Police was their lyrics. I learned about Nabakov and Lolita first from a Police hit (mentioned above -- you do know which one, right?). I think I even learned that Mephistopheles was another name for the devil from another Police classic (also mentioned above). What can I say, I was young when those songs came out, and I didn't know literary references that well back then. But The Police songs actually had me looking these things up as a young teenager, and even a preteen. I've since become a little more adept with things literary, but I always look back at my early learning experiences with these songs as something special -- they got my appetite whetted to know what these things were all about, and set me on the road to figure it out. And, best of all, I did it all on my own. It wasn't exactly like my parents or teachers were fans of The Police. They couldn't have been so cool, right? (Well, that was what I thought then.) I suppose that my image of my teachers changed dramatically when I found out that Sting had taught literature for a while back in the early days (I read that somewhere, anyway). That little tidbit also changed the images that "Don't Stand So Close to Me" brought to mind too. :-)

I still love that blend of fun and serious that is always a part of the music of The Police. They are serious musicians, and serious thinkers. But their music is also incredibly fun.

This poem originally appeared in the anthology Finding Your Wings, and it was the first poem I had published. It has gone through some modification (ok, a lot) since then, and is part of a collection I have written on the Garden of Eden. I hope to see that collection published eventually.

Hawaii Vacation Rentals

On a holiday to New Zealand a couple of years ago, I found that the most affordable way to travel was to stay in a rental apartment. Not only that, but it was much more comfortable than a conventional hotel setting too. It was especially good because we had 2 little ones with us, and one elderly person (no... not me).

If I were going back to Hawaii right now (and it has been nearly 20 years since I was last there for an extended stay), I would be looking into Hawaii Vacation Rentals. I didn't much like my accommodations in Hawaii, and it really affected the whole mood of my trip to that paradise. I learned a lesson well there, that you've got to stay in a place that is good, and that is convenient for your needs. A rental is just the sort of place that can make a stay in Hawaii the best trip one has ever taken.

When I started blogging, it was at the Drupal-based site, Writing Up. I loved the community that grew up there. Drupal sites are made for community, chatting, enjoying other like-minded people. I loved it.

Then it collapsed.

I tried making all of my other blogs into something like Writing Up. All of them combined didn't make it quite the same. I never imagined that Writing Up would be so hard to replace.

Thankfully, another fellow-blogger at WU felt the same. And she did something about it. She replaced it.

You'll find my main blog at communati, at least for now. If it turns out to be as good as it looks it is going to be, "for now" could turn out to be a very long time.
